ROOF FLAP FORWARD

ROOF FLAP FORWARD

A roof flap is a method of creating a final extrication pathway. If performed in conjunction with a side removal, the result allows maximum space for extrication and allows personnel maximum access for extrication of bariatric patients. It requires the B, C and (where applicable) D posts to be cut and relief cuts made in roof near the top of the A pillar. With all interior plastic trim removed: Identify the correct sequence of posts to be cut (usually the B pillar nearest the patient is the last cut). Cut each post as low as possible avoiding possible airbag inflation devices, points of strength and seatbelt anchor points. Make 1 relief cut either side of the vehicle approximately 10 cm behind the top of the A pillar. Personnel should provide support to the roof as cuts are made to ensure it does not drop and potentially compromise the patient or other team members. When the last cut is being made, personnel should ensure the full weight of the roof is under control and once free, should flap the roof forward ensuring they use the correct lifting and handling techniques.
