NCAP

NCAP

There are organisations around the world who routinely assess the safety of new vehicle. They are located in Europe (Belgium), Australia, USA, Asia (Malaysia, China, South Korea, Japan), South America and India. These organisations will buy up to four of the same model of vehicle (anonymously) and expose it to a broad range of tests. The testing organisation will inform the vehicle manufacturer of its intention to test and provide the opportunity to provide the model with the very latest specification (if there has been a change or upgrade). Alternatively, vehicle manufacturers can sponsor a test of their own vehicle. Due to the proven commercial value of crash tests, vehicle manufacturers have greatly improved the construction of cars in key areas, ensuring a good performance and positive result. Historically, vehicles that have not performed well have had poor sales and in some cases, have been discontinued purely on the basis of safety. Vehicle Extrication - The NEXT GENERATION looks at the process that has given us stronger, lighter vehicles. Available on lukas-store.com or on amazon.de

B Pillar Blowout

B Pillar Blowout

Without doubt, on modern vehicles the B pillar rip/blowout is far more difficult than on older vehicles. Stronger, stiffer construction means that ‘ripping’ or ‘tearing’ your initial relief cut can create problems and delays. When we consider what our aim is, I would always recommend performing a side removal by removing the two doors and the B pillar individually (as detailed above). That said, it is still a valid technique, as we still have older vehicles on the roads. Vehicle Extrication - THE NEXT GENERATION provides a full description, data sheet and FULL LENGTH HD video link to this and many other popular processes and techniques.

VEHICLE EXTRICATION - THE NEXT GENERATION: COMMUNICATION

VEHICLE EXTRICATION - THE NEXT GENERATION: COMMUNICATION

effective communication will, in the first instance, establish and maintain a safe working environment and reduce the likelihood of accidents involving members of the team. Identifying risks and hazards is only useful if they are communicated at the right time in the right way. It is important that we use the correct and most appropriate method of communication and ensure that we have effective communication skills; strong, clear and succinct. This is especially important during times of stress where the environment may not be conducive with communication. I feel that we do not practice our communication enough. Our training must test our human factors as well as our practical skills and that includes how and when we communicate, who we communicate with and how we check understanding. It tends to become rather methodical and 'scripted‘ rather than focused and meaningful; we should place more emphasis on this skill. Communication underpins all human factors. Vehicle Extrication - The NEXT GENERATION asks us to consider how we as a team communicate. How do we talk to other agencies? Communication is key to delivering a successful outcome in a challenging environment.

SRS & AIRBAG SYSTEMS

SRS & AIRBAG SYSTEMS

Whilst there is no doubt that passive safety systems have saved many thousands of lives, they remain a major topic of conversation within the rescue community due to the potential risks they pose if undeployed i.e. when they have not activated during the initial impact. This is principally around the issue of airbags. I have witnessed first-hand that our misunderstanding of this risk can compromise patient care; this should not happen. Simple preventative measures (isolation of power and limiting exposure to the risk area) will ensure the safety of emergency responders and allow us to proceed. For many years I have worked closely with passive safety engineers from major motor manufacturers and they have confirmed my suspicion that the long standing ‘safe working distances’ around airbags, the so called ‘5-10-15-20-inch rule’ is outdated and impractical. Vehicle Extrication - The NEXT GENERATION looks at these systems and contextualizes the perceived risks. These systems have impeded our ability to extricate patients, but is it time to rethink the risk?

OPEN VEHICLE DOOR (ON SIDE)

Opening the upper doors on a vehicle on its side is difficult as the full weight of the doors has to be lifted. For this reason, it may be necessary to use a ladder to lift the doors from above, but this can only be done once the vehicle is fully stabilised. Alternatively, once a team member has gained access, they can push the door from below.
